The San Diego International Airport has successfully completed a monumental $3.4 billion project, culminating nearly a decade of meticulous planning and development. This significant undertaking has led to the replacement of the outdated 1960s-era Terminal 1 with a state-of-the-art facility, alongside the construction of a new access road to the airport.
Initial phases involved the removal of unused cargo buildings and the relocation of utilities, paving the way for the construction of the new terminal.
The highlight of this project is the newly unveiled terminal, boasting 30 gates and featuring enhanced food and retail concessions, along with a cutting-edge baggage system designed to handle up to 2,000 bags per hour during peak times. The first phase saw the opening of nineteen gates in mid-2025, followed by the demolition of the old terminal. The completion of the project was marked by the opening of the remaining 11 gates in 2027, fully realizing the vision for a modernized and efficient airport infrastructure that caters to the needs of travelers and enhances the San Diego International Airport's capacity to connect the world.
